Stop Covering Your Rosacea With Makeup: We Can Help You Clear Your Skin

If you’ve been battling redness, bumps, and flare-ups, you’re not alone. Rosacea affects millions of people and can be incredibly frustrating.
Many sufferers resort to layering on makeup just to feel comfortable leaving the house. But makeup doesn’t fix the problem — it just hides it.
Our team of expert dermatologists at Dermatology Associates of Central NJ has good news: You don’t have to cover up your rosacea anymore.
With the right treatment plan and guidance from one of our specialists, you can start clearing your skin and feeling confident in your natural complexion. Here’s everything you should know about rosacea and what really works to treat it.
Know thy enemy
Rosacea can appear at any age, but it most commonly starts presenting in patients aged 30 and older. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s understood to be linked to inflammatory and hereditary factors.
It’s also important to know that rosacea doesn’t present the same for everyone. There are different types of rosacea, each with its own set of symptoms. Let’s dive in.
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea
This type of rosacea is characterized by persistent redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels called telangiectasias.
Papulopustular rosacea
With papulopustular rosacea, you experience redness, swelling, and acne-like breakouts.
Phymatous rosacea
This variety leads to thickened skin and a bumpy texture, often affecting your nose.
Ocular rosacea
Ocular rosacea irritates your eyes, leading to redness and swelling.
Unfortunately, there’s no cure for rosacea. And if you have it, you can expect to experience flare-ups throughout your life. However, we offer a number of ways to help you manage your rosacea so you can tackle your symptoms today and in the future.
Treatments for rosacea
Dealing with rosacea is incredibly frustrating, and we understand why many opt to cover up their symptoms with makeup.
While there’s nothing inherently wrong with using makeup to cover rosacea (unless your cosmetics contain sensitizing and allergenic ingredients), we think you deserve a better solution. Here are some of the things we can do for you and your skin.
Trigger identification and prevention
In addition to advanced rosacea treatments, we also work with you to help prevent your symptoms from worsening and keep them at bay long-term. The key to this is knowing your triggers.
Common rosacea triggers include environmental aggressors such as excessive sun exposure, extreme weather, and harsh personal care ingredients, or internal triggers like inflammation, alcohol intake, and stress. Even spicy and warm foods can set off a flare-up.
It’s our goal to help you identify your triggers and avoid and manage them whenever possible. This might look like wearing sunscreen daily or steering clear of certain ingredients.
Medication and topical skin care
In many cases, oral antibiotics tamp down inflammation to make rosacea flare-ups less frequent and less intense. You might also benefit from topical creams or lotions that contain azelaic acid and can address bumpy skin and swelling. Topical antibiotics can also relieve redness and roughness.
In-office procedures
There are also a few options for in-office treatments. Different forms of light-based procedures can improve your rosacea, depending on how the condition presents on your skin.
One of our favorite ways to effectively treat rosacea and other skin issues like sun damage, melasma, and general signs of aging is with the Excilite® phototherapy system. Phototherapy works quickly to reduce the visibility of facial blood vessels and thickened facial skin.
